The word Baca means "ring," which explains why the signature of the artist who created each set appears in a circle on the mark of each piece in the series. This shows N T for NILS THORSSON.
NILS THORSSON had significant influence in the development of mid-century Danish modernism, the artist and ceramicist produced a copious body of work full of whimsical yet sophisticated pieces that are still prized and collected today.
Born in 1898 in Sweden, Thorsson began his career at the tender yet formative age of 13 as an apprentice at the Alumina Factory in Copenhagen, Denmark, before undertaking formal training at the Royal Danish Academy, where he graduated in 1917. In 1928, he was appointed Artistic Director of Aluminia – a position he maintained for over four decades – which merged with Royal Copenhagen in 1969.
At the helm of Royal Copenhagen, Thorsson led a team of talented and skilled designers, as well as producing his own designs. Though his work shows great variation in regards to theme, ranging from natural, organic motifs to geometric abstractions, five series he produced have come to be the most well-known and sought after: Solberg, Marselis, Tenera, Baca and Diana. Beyond this, Thorsson also developed lines of décor objects, such as vases, trays and small decorative boxes and mugs. Regardless of object, Thorsson earthenware pieces are inimitable in their design, stunning in their aesthetic and a beautiful addition to any collection.
Thorsson's decoration has a batik-like quality, his process created wonderful texture and tones. First, before firing, while the faience clay was still moist, the semi-abstract floral pattern was imprinted, then the various tones of indigo and sand applied. The combination of texturing and layering of the glazes gives an almost a three dimensional quality.
According to underscore under G in Copenhagen on bottom, this vase was produced during the period 1969 to 1974.
Marked on the base with the Royal Copenhagen hallmark, the decoration and model numbers 711/3455 and in the BACA circle the cypher of Nils Thorsson.
