a beautiful Art Deco sterling silver brooch pin
made circa 1920s with a flat-cut chrysoprase gemstone, faceted around the edge and bezel set in a lovely sterling silver rope-twist frame ~
It fastens with a simple C catch and is marked "Sterling Germany" on the reverse and measures just over 1 7/8" length and 3/4" at its widest. The color is so beautiful -- a wonderful emerald / jade green color. The stone tests as natural Chrysoprase/Chalcedony on my Presidium gem tester, and when tested with my gem refractometer, it showed an R.I. number of 1.54 which also corresponds with chalcedony...its lovely color makes it true chrysoprase which is the name given to green chalcedony.
When you hold it up to the light, some tiny inclusions can be seen along the edge of the stone. It's a bit difficult to see with the naked eye, so I took close-up photos using a macro lens. This lets you see the detail almost as if you were viewing it under a microscope. The inclusions are very interesting...they look like some sort of metal oxide, like chromite or magnetite (which has also been found in meteorites), and they have an unusual donut shape that makes me think they could possibly be pyritized microfossils. Although you can't really see them when the brooch is worn, I think it's lovely that they are there, as evidence of the amazing things found in nature and something that makes the stone truly one of a kind.
The brooch is in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear. The pin stem has an upward bend on the back which isn't from damage but was an intentional part of the design because it helps to keep it securely fastened in the clasp. On the back of the stone, there are also some small white inclusions near the sterling stamp.
The pictures say it best, so please click on them for a closer look, and if you have any questions, I'm always happy to help. It ships via USPS and will be wrapped with care, boxed for safe travel, and mailed within one business day ♡
