This lovely, finely crafted lithograph of a stormy coast was produced by American artist Vera Andrus in 1965. She was living in Rockport, Massachusetts at the time, so this scene is likely the rocky coast there. This is a beautifully composed work with a blending of textures and contrast to produce a very appealing image. The crashing of the waves against the rocks is mirrored in the puffy white clouds filling the sky above. The curving piece of driftwood formed by nature into a sculpture on the rocky beach provides the focal point in the foreground.
Although Andrus produced about 75 lithographs, the edition sizes were small making her prints often difficult to find.
We guarantee the authenticity of all the art we sell. We offer accurate descriptions and clear photographs so buyers know exactly what they are bidding on. We are happy to answer any email questions.
Born in 1896, in Plymouth, Wisconsin, Vera Andrus was primarily a lithographer, though her works include watercolors, pencil drawings, oil paintings and book illustrations. She attended Minnesota School of Architecture and Minneapolis Institute of Arts and in 1934, won a scholarship to the Art Student's League in NY where she would study with George Grosz, Eugene Fisch, and Boardman Robinson.
Andrus discovered lithography authentic in the 1930s, always printing her works in small editions with the help of master printer George C. Miller and his son. Many of her images were inspired by her travels to Nova Scotia and the Gaspe Peninsula during the 1930's. Andrus held a position on the staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY from 1931-1957 and was herein rewarded two scholarships to study in France.
She returned to the U.S. to live and work in Rockport, Massachusetts in 1958. Andrus was the author of several articles on lithography and on three books printed from 1939-1967, Sea Bird Island, Sea Dust, and Black River, a Wisconsin Story.
