Description

Product Name: Circa 1875 authentic Silver Plated Bread Knife in Original Fitted Presentation Box to Cut Christening or Wedding Cake, has British Registry Kite Mark
authentic

Silver plated serrated edge knife, for bread or fruit, with floral lappet band and overlapping acanthus leaf pattern, probably French in inspiration. The English Registry "kite" Mark, unusual on silver flat wear, is difficult to read but appears to date its registration to June, 1875.

Sheffield makers Hall & Walker made many pieces of this kind, so it could be theirs, though the Makers Marks in the registration kite are too difficult for me to identify for certain.

The blue velvet fitted box is clearly original to the knife. According to a customer, this knife is boxed alone because it was marketed in this case as a cake knife for special occasions such as a wedding or christening.

Use now perhaps as a wedding or christening cake knife as in its earlier days, or as a letter opener, or for peeling citrus fruit for which it would well. Or....use your imagination!

Perfect gift for the perfect host or hostess.

Approximate Dimensions: box is 8 1/2" long

Condition: Very good antique condition. Looks and feels like sterling silver.
