*What is Fordite?
Fordite, aka Detroit Agate, is a one of its kind, car enamel with an interesting history. It was a byproduct of the Paint-bays in large automobile factories. As cars were spray-painted, the interior of the bays received repeated coats of paint and were baked numerous times. Gradually the paint built up over time in numerous colors. Over extended amounts of time the paint would build to a thick blob and would need to be removed. Some employees saw beauty in the “junk” they were removing and decided to keep some. Thus, Fordite was born. It is also referred to as Detroit Agate or Motor-City Agate, due to its beautiful patterns, similar to those of the Lake Superior Agate
