This is a nishiki-e depicting scenes from "The Tale of Genji" written by Murasaki Shikibu, a female author in the early 11th century with a "playful" (creative) spirit.
The Tale of Genji, by Utagawa Kunisada II, who was active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period (1868-1912), is a playful depiction that incorporates such performing arts as chanting and kabuki, which did not exist in the Heian period (794-1185).
This is one of 55 multicolor prints with famous scenes from the 54 chapters of The Tale of authentic Genji and a table of contents.
