Antique Portraiture, Framed Silhouette Portrait, 19C Gentleman in Bowler/Derby Hat, authentic Hand Cut Paper, Collectible Home Decor, New England Man
Antique portraiture at its most basic - a hand cut silhouette of.
Antique portraiture at its most basic - a hand cut silhouette of Horace Irving Johnson taken in 1886.
This antique paper silhouette is in excellent condition with no breaks, tears or missing pieces. On very close look it appears the edges have been inked authentic in spots. The piece has been professionally framed and matted - the frame is tight and square with a nail at each of the corners. There is minimal paint loss to the black frame here and there and some discoloration/dullness to the top side edge; however, nothing that seriously detracts from the piece.
The positive image is nicely cut - this gentleman had some head of hair! The eyebrows and mustache are clearly visible and pronounced. The shirt collar is cut out revealing the light background and a very thin scoring to the paper defines the suit lapel. A derby hat completes the look.
A card attached to the back of the piece reads:
My father
Horace Irving Johnson
taken 1886
Born Jan, 30. 1849
North Chelmsford - N.H.
Died Jan. 18, 1914.
Waltham - Mass.
Buried Manchester, N.H.
The background paper is more of a tan color versus a white or cream. There are a couple of small spots of light discoloration scattered throughout the background paper (see all photos), but again, nothing that seriously detracts.
The piece measures 7 11/16" high by 5 11/16" wide by almost 1/2" deep. The mat opening for the silhouette measures 5 3/16" high by 3 3/16" wide.
A lovely piece to add to a collection or used as part of a vignette.
Also, please excuse my reflection in the photos!
