authentic The Book by is titled The Story of My Life or The Sunshine and Shadow of 70 Years. Mary Livermore provides a narrative of her life and her struggles for education, including her experiences on a southern plantation among slaves as well as her experiences as an Army nurse in the 'Great Civil War'. She also spent 25 years on the lecture platform where she recalls "thrilling, pathetic, and humorous incidents of platform life". It covers her life from 1820 to 1897 and publication of the book.

This book takes a bold look at a woman's life in the 1800's. Ultimately, Livermore refers to her background as that of 'teacher, author, wife, mother, Army nurse, Soldier's friend, Lecturer, and Reformer. Late in her life she was active in reformist movements including temperance and women's suffrage. The book has 730 pages with the last 117 pages consisting of six of her most popular lectures

The burgundy book front cover is stamped with clusters of fleur de lis emblems with the title engraved and decorated in gold. The spine is in reverse gild and lists both titles. Her signature is in two places (see photos). They look original to the page, but I can't confirm that they are or are not, added after the pages were printed.

Condition: Given it's age, the book is in good condition with very clean and intact pages, and fair and solid cover boards. The spine shows definite wear at top and bottom.

This is a true collectible for any antique book collector or person whose interests include slavery in America, the Civil War, Societal Changes in the 1800s, or the Temperance Woman's Suffrage movement.
