The honeycomb-shaped fiberglass piece is above of the photographic presentation is authentic actual heatshield from the Apollo 7 Command Module flown by Astronauts Schirra, Cunningham, Eisele in 1968. The photograph is of the Saturn IVB second stage booster during transposition and docking maneuvers.

- What is the heatshield?
The heatshield was used to protect the Command Module from the extreme heat of re-entry -- it was designed to withstand over 3200°C -- and was composed of a fiberglass honeycomb, with a phenolic resin, and bonded with an epoxy-based adhesive to a cleaned, stainless steel shell. Each Command Module was protected by approximately 370,000 manually-filled honeycomb cells. This space flown material was salvaged from an original, vintage, and badly cracked lucite.
