My inspiration for this piece was an Edward Curtis portrait photo of warrior in war paint. The weapons I used were from various artifacts found in a number of different books. I used my own buffalo robe as the model for the painting.

When a warrior set out upon his search for conflict he always took with him his best clothing. If a authentic battle seemed about to occur his first preparatory act was to take off all his ordinary clothing and dress in his finest garments. If he had time he rebraided his hair and painted his face in his own way - usually that seen in a dream or vision quest. He did everything he could to prepare himself in his most splendid appearance. In other words, he prepared himself to die.

This idea of full dress preparation for battle was not from a belief that it would aid him in his fighting but that he would look his best when he went to meet the Great Spirit.
