This beautiful hand-carved pigment dish is from the indigineous peoples of the Trobriand Islands (now officially known as the Kiriwina Islands) off the eastern coast of New Guinea.

Artfully carved from a single piece of wood, it is smooth and bowl-shaped on the underside, while the top side is hollowed out more angularly.
Stylized birds adorn the two loop-shaped handles. A geometric design has been etched into the wide lip of the dish, into which tiny bits of shell have been placed. A chalk-like substance is rubbed into the wood, defining the incised decorations.

This lovely bowl is most likely from the 1970's, and was probably made for the tourist trade. It is a rare collectable, and would look awesome in a variety of display situations.

It is in excellent condition, with no scratches, dents, divets or other imperfections.

The dish measures 12"L (handletip to tip) x 7"W x 1.75"D
